SSU Opens Spring Break With a Win

by Panchito Ojeda

San Diego, CA - Sonoma State started it's three game road trip with a win over San Diego State 10-7.

The Aztecs started the game with the opening faceoff but the Sonoma defense held strong and was able to get the ball to the offense who promptly put the Seawolves up 1-0 on a Joey Piombo ('20) sweeping goal.  Sonoma went-up 2-0 on a goal from Angelo Lagomarsino ('19).  Sonoma found itself in the penalty box twice in the first quarter and the Aztecs were able to capitalize taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

Going into the second, the faceoff woes continued but the defense buckled down and gave up just 1 goal to the Aztecs while the Seawolves got going on offense, scoring 6 goals to take a commanding 8-4 lead into halftime.  Defensively the Seawolves were led in goal by Andrew Moore ('21) who made 5 saves while giving up 4 goals.

In the second half both teams tightened defensively and traded goals.  Goalie Jackson Feinstein came up with some huge saves to preserve the lead and the teams entered the fourth 9-5 game.

The Aztecs continued to press on offense and their pressure resulted in a three man-up scenario in which they were able to get one goal to bring the game to 9-7.  Some timely stops and groundballs allowed Sonoma to have the ball on offense with about 3 minutes left and they were able to break the Aztec pressure for the 10th goal of the game off the stick of Joey Piombo.

"This was a great start to the trip."  stated Head Coach Panchito Ojeda, "Big thanks to Bryan Bome and the SDSU Lacrosse team for hosting us.  It was a battle from the start and both teams played hard.  We are looking forward to an off day and then playing Minnesota on Sunday."
