Sonoma Splits Spring Break Trip

Rohnert Park, CA – Sonoma State spent Spring Break in the Desert dropping their first contest to reignining mcla national champions #2 Grand Canyon but finishing the trip with an 8-7 victory over the Arizona Wildcats.

The Seawolves arrived in Phoenix to sunny skies and some heat.  The first half was a back and forth afar with the Lopes drawing first blood.  Sonoma found a few pipes, and with some hard riding and precision shooting notched 2 goals but Grand Canyon went into the 1st quarter break 3-2.  The second quarter was a defensive battle for both teams with the Lopes notching the only goal and finishing the second with a halftime score of 4-2.  It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Lopes took control and were able to outscore the Seawolves 5-1 to take a 9-3 lead ending the third.  The game would finish at 13-4.

Looking to bounce back the Seawolves headed to Tucson to battle the Wildcats.  The Seawolves Hayden Dall drew first blood to take a 1-0 lead, but the Wildcats would score 3 unanswered to finish the quarter 3-1.  However, Sonoma wasn’t done yet.  Over the next two quarters the Seawolves outscored the Wildcats 6-2 to take a 7-5 lead going into the fourth.  The Wildcats battled and tied the score at 7-7 with just under 5 minutes to play.  However, Angelo Lagomarsino took the next offensive possession and beat his guy to put the Seawolves up 8-7.  A strong defensive stand to finish the game earned the Seawolves a victory.

“It was a blue collar effort”  stated Coach Panchito Ojeda.  “We knew both games would be a dog fight and we came prepared to battle.  Each day our team continues to get better.  Now we must focus on league play.”

Sonoma heads back to California with home games against Dominican on March 30 and Cal on April 7.
