Seawolves Go 1-1 on the Weekend, Move to 3-1 on the Season

The Sonoma State Seawolves return from their trip to Southern California with a record of 3-1, after splitting their games against the University of Arizona (2/15) and USC (2/16) over this past weekend.

Players with standout performances from the weekend include senior Dylan Hardy (1G, 1A, 12GB, 5 CTO on the weekend), senior Nick Frangione (6G, 1A on the weekend), senior Benen Powers (3G, 4A on the weekend), senior Mason Colaizzi (6G on the weekend), junior John Heck (94% face-off win rate vs USC), and senior Dustin Smith (2G, 2A, 5GB on the weekend).

SSU vs. University of Arizona (2/15/26)

In the first, Arizona got off to a 4-1 lead before the Seawolf offense snatched back the early momentum. Nick Frangione led the charge, scoring 5 goals in the contest along with an assist. Sophomore Matt McCurdy and junior Ryan Kane both had electric goals in the second quarter, with both players blazing shots by the goalie to find the top corners after nice individual dodges. With less than ten seconds left in the half, it was McCurdy who nearly scored again on a behind the back shot that was denied before time expired. At half, the Seawolves were tied with the Wildcats 7-7.

The second half was a different story, as Arizona showed off their elite ball movement and time and room shooting abilities to score 16 goals in the second half. The Seawolf offense continued to find open looks, with Mason Colaizzi scoring two nice goals in the second half, both with his off-hand. In the end, the Seawolves suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 11-23.

SSU vs. USC (2/16/26)

The first quarter got off to a slow start, as both offenses seemed to be stifled by the torrential downpour that began during warm-ups and continued throughout the course of the game. Junior face-off specialist John Heck had a career day, going 17-1 on face-offs for a 94% win percentage on the day. Heck's dominance allowed for crucial possessions throughout the contest for the Seawolves, a major advantage in an otherwise sloppy game due to the wet field conditions. Senior Dustin Smith scored first for the Seawolves, finding a time and room shot from top middle that snuck by the Trojan's keeper, set up by Powers. Then, it was DJ Santiago who found Colaizzi inside for a high percentage look. At half, the Seawolves were tied with USC 2-2.

In the second half, senior attackman Benen Powers took matters into his own hands, scoring an unassisted goal on a nice inside roll on a dodge from X. Later in the quarter, it was Powers again with the shot of the day, set up by fellow captain Dustin Smith. Powers showed off his outside shooting ability on the shot, ringing two pipes for a goal that garnered a loud roar from the SSU crowd and seemed to swing the momentum in favor of the Seawolves. Shortly after, it was Frangione who went bar-down on a rip from 15 yards, bringing the Seawolf lead to 6-3. In the end, the Seawolves defeated the Trojans by a score of 9-6, moving to 3-1 on the season.
