Seawolves Defeat UC Davis on the Road in Season Opener
In their season opener, the Sonoma State Men's lacrosse team defeated the UC Davis Aggies on Friday January 31st, 2026 by a score of 12-7 at Dairy Field in Davis, Ca. The Seawolves are now 1-0 on the season.
Standout performances from the game include senior Mason Colaizzi (4G, 1A), senior Benen Powers (2G, 4A), sophomore DJ Santiago (4G), senior Dylan Hardy (6 GB's), senior Dustin Smith (2G, 1A), and junior Riley Corcoran (10 Saves, 2GA).
The Seawolves started the game red hot, with Mason Colaizzi running past his defender and hitting a righty shot on the run to get the scoring started for SSU. Senior midfielder Dustin Smith would score next, taking advantage of an unsettled situation to score a high bounce shot in the top left corner. Colaizzi and Smith would trade off for the next two goals to make it a 4-0 game. On the following faceoff, junior faceoff specialist John Heck started a fast break which was finished by senior attackman Benen Powers to put the Seawolves in a commanding 5-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The rest of the quarter featured long possessions and good looks at cage for both teams, but neither team were able to find the back of the net.
In the second quarter, both defenses seemed to have the upper hand as each team was held to just one goal. Junior net minder Riley Corcoran proved to be stout in cage throughout the contest, but he was particularly stingy in the first half. Corcoran accumulated 9 of his 10 saves in the contest in the first half, while allowing only 1 goal. The Seawolf defense as a whole seemed to be clicking out of the gates, led by senior captain Dylan Hardy at LSM and junior close defender Liam Crow (aka "The Twin Towers"). At the half, the Seawolves led 6-1.
After a few halftime adjustments, the Sonoma State offense came out looking sharp. Crisp passing allowed midfielder DJ Santiago an opportunity to show off his range with his off hand, blazing two outside shots past the goalie with his left. Santiago would go on to score 4 goals in the second half, an encouraging start for the underclassman who spent most of last season dealing with an injury. The Seawolves ended the third quarter up 10-2.
In the fourth, the Seawolf reserves took the field to wrap up the remaining minutes of the game. The Aggies were able to take advantage of some mistakes by the Seawolf defense, scoring 5 of their 7 goals in the fourth quarter. Due to a string of penalties late in the game, the Seawolves played roughly half of the quarter man-down, at one point attempting to fend off the Aggies with a two man advantage, but were unable to do so. In the end, the Seawolves held a 12-7 advantage and left Davis with their first victory of the season.
Next week, Sonoma State will travel to Palo Alto to take on their first league opponent, Stanford University on Saturday, February 7th, at 1pm on Johnson Field.
