Fall Wrap-Up

2025 Fall Wrap-Up

The Sonoma State Men's Lacrosse team wrapped up their 2025 "fall ball" season on October 26th, with an impressive showing against NCAA Division 2 opponent Dominican University. The Seawolves handled the Penguins in the contest from start to finish, with a combination of stingy defensive play and excellent ball movement on offense. The Seawolves finished the fall with a perfect 5-0 record, and look to shake-up the WCLL this spring after recently being ranked 4th in the coach's preseason poll (boo!).

This year, fall ball consisted of 24 practices, 15 team workouts, 5 fall ball games, and 2 film sessions. The two months seemingly flew by, and this year's senior heavy squad is looking to make the most of their final season together.  After a productive fall, the boys will look to carry this momentum into the spring, with their sights set on a trip to the MCLA National Tournament in Virginia this May. Some highlights from the fall are listed below:

Colin O'Kane Game (Palo Alto Men's Club) (W) 15-7

The annual Colin O'Kane Game vs the Palo Alto Ducks was played in Seawolf Stadium (formerly known as the NCAA soccer stadium), which is where all future games will be played (weather permitting). The game featured strong showings from senior attackman Benen Powers, junior defenseman Liam Crow, and sophomore midfielder Bradey Tyler. Senior Dylan Hardy was awarded this year's Colin O'Kane scholarship after the game, which is awarded to a player who exemplifies being a great community member for both the SSU lacrosse team and the university. A big thanks to the O'Kane family for their continued support!

Diablo Valley College (W) 19-3

In a one sided affair, the Seawolves defeated DVC on the road by a score of 19-3. Many players had great showings, including junior Riley Corcoran (0 goals against) and senior Dustin Smith who had multiple nice goals. The play of the day was a perfectly executed fast break in the 4th quarter, generated by d-mids Owen McCarthy and Kaleb Kuska.

Sonoma State Alumni Weekend (W) 17-7

Age seemed to be a factor, as the young bucks proved to be too much for the grizzled vets.  The SSU offense was particularly sharp, with great spacing and crisp passing throughout the contest. It was great to see all of the legendary alumni dust off their cleats and run around with their brothers. After the game, Angelo Lagomarcino (class of 2019) expressed how much he enjoyed receiving the shut-off during the two man-up opportunities the alumni had during the contest.

Following the conclusion of the alumni game, Mike Annala kindly hosted the alumni awards banquet at his home. Over 110 people were in attendance, and it was great to hear the stories from former players about how the program had such a positive impact on their lives. The banquet included the 2025 team awards, as well as Hall of Fame inductions for two Sonoma lacrosse legends. First, Brad Bochesa (class of 2016) was inducted into the SSU Hall of Fame. In addition, Ben Alexander (class of 2003) was inducted into the MCLA Hall of Fame. Alexander joins MJ Crickmore, Dallas Hartley, Dominic Gomez, and Coach Doug Carl in the select group that are now cemented in MLCA lore.

A VERY special thank you to all of the generous donations we received during the weekend from our supportive alumni and their families. Your donations helped us raise over $20,000! Your generosity helps support the lacrosse program this year and beyond.

Barbery Coast Mens' Club (W) 12-11 OT

A sloppy game overall ended with a dazzling finish, with the Seawolves generating a defensive stop with 35 seconds left to set up a transition score by Owen McCarthy to tie the game and force overtime. Nick Frangione would seal the deal on the first possession of OT with an overpowering righty rip to give the Seawolves the walk-off OT win.

Seawolf Combine

The boys participated in our annual combine event which included the 40 yard dash, 20 yard shuttle, 60 yard shuttle, 3 cone drill, max bench press (185), max pull ups, and a timed mile run. This event provides an opportunity for the athletes to see where they stack up against each other, and always leads to fruitful competition. Sophomore midfielder Jack Engblom was named this year's "Combine King" after a dominant performance across the board.

Dominican University (NCAA Div. 2) Score cannot be posted, per NCAA rules

The Seawolves were looking forward to the opportunity to play their former WCLL rival Dominican at Kennelly Field and they showed up big time! The Seawolves jumped on the Penguins and never looked back, handling them from start to finish. Starters were pulled in the 4th quarter as the future stars of SSU helped seal the deal to end the game. Senior attackman Mason Colaizzi went off, finding the back of the net five times. Freshman Ryan McLaughlin also had a great game, with one particularly nice highlight on a low-to-high shot placed in the top corner.

Full Varsity Weight Room Access

For the last six years, the SSU coaching staff has attempted to gain access to the varsity weight room, with little to no luck. This year, due to the cancellation of varsity sports, the university has granted the team unprecedented access to the weight room, allowing for full 2 hour workout sessions with the proper training equipment to build strength and speed for the upcoming season.

Under the tutelage of Coach Smith, the SSU lacrosse players are working to increase strength, conditioning, mobility, and overall athleticism through grueling workouts every Monday and Wednesday. The team is now also implementing olympic lifting and plyometric training in order to prepare for the upcoming season. These voluntary workouts have been well attended so far, and will be a staple in the months leading up to the spring season.

Seawolf Prospect Day

On November 1st, 2025, we will be hosting our fifth annual Seawolf Prospect Day. During the prospect day, we will provide over 25 recruits with a guided campus tour, a practice led by the SSU staff, a full-field scrimmage, and a BBQ for the athletes and their families. We have had great success showing these prospects what it's like playing for the Noma lacrosse program at Sonoma State. Thank you to our generous alumni network who help us fund the BBQ each year!

Day of Service (Give-Back Clinic)

Each year, after fall ball comes to a close, the Sonoma State lacrosse team hosts a free clinic for the youth players in the Rancho Cotate Lacrosse Club. This year's give-back clinic will be on December 5th at Sunrise Park at 6pm. In years past, the boys have had an excellent time spreading their love for the game with the youth in the Rohnert Park community. We believe that by giving back to our community we create a lasting impact with all involved, and the boys take pride in their opportunity to make this a meaningful experience each year.

One last huge thank you to all of you who continue to support our proud program here at SSU. We look forward to a very exciting spring season this year! And, as we like to say in the friendly city, "It's a great day to be blue!"
